Investing in Children with Cancer:  The Success of last year’s event.
The 9th Annual Ira W. Sohn Investment Research Conference 2004

The 9th Annual Ira W. Sohn Investment Research Conference was held on May 18, 2004 at the Grand Hyatt in Manhattan and raised over $1.35 million for Tomorrows Children’s Fund. This brings total funds generated through this successful event to more than $3.8 million since its inception!

Ira W. Sohn was diagnosed with cancer in 1989 at the young age of 24.  He was treated for a short time at Tomorrows Children’s Institute, but succumbed to the disease four years later.  To honor Ira and support Tomorrows Children’s Fund, Ira’s boyhood friend and business colleague Lance Laifer, along with his associates Daniel Nir and Douglas Hirsh, founded the “Ira W. Sohn Investment Research Conference in 1996.  Since then, the event has been a must-attend for all of Wall Street.

The 9th Annual Ira W. Sohn Investment Research Conference was no exception. Co-chaired by Douglas Hirsch, Managing Partner, Seneca Capital; Mitch Lester, Managing Partner, Lester Brothers Capital Management; and Daniel Nir, Managing Partner, Gracie Capital, this year’s event was attended by over 550 people who paid $3,000 each for the opportunity to share in the insights of the industry’s most successful investors.  And thanks to the generosity of Mr. Hirsch and Mr. Nir, who covered all conference expenses, every dollar raised will directly support Tomorrows Children’s Fund in our mission to speed the healing and ease the suffering of children with cancer and serious blood disorders!

Some of the sharpest money managers in the business were featured speakers at the conference, including: Scott Bonner, founding Partner and Managing Member of SAB Capital Management; Christopher Browne, Managing Director of Tweedy, Browne Company and President of Tweedy, Browne Funds; Bill Fleckenstein, President of Fleckenstein Capital and Director of Pan American Silver; Emanuel J. Friedman, Co-Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer of Friedman, Billings, Ramsey Group, Inc.; David Gerstenhaber,  founder of Argonaut Capital Management; Joel Greenblatt, founder and Managing Partner of Gotham Capital; Abner Kurtin, co-founder and Portfolio Manager of K Capital; Spencer Lampert, Managing Director of Tudor Investment Corporation; Dennis Leibowitz, General Partner of Act II Partners; Daniel S. Loeb, founder and Managing Member of Third Point Management Company; Boone Pickens, founder of BP Capital and BO Capital Commodities Fund; and Michael Price, Managing Partner of MFP Investors.

Tomorrows Children’s Fund was represented by Vincent Massa who spoke to the crowd about his two and a half year old son who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of nine months.  Tomorrows Children’s Fund  Judith S. Sohn, mother of Ira W. Sohn and Vice President and Executive Board Member a strong supporter of the conference and for years organized the conference herself with little help, attended the conference with her husband Dr. Walter Sohn . Judith, who established “Ira’s Run for Tomorrows Children”, initially encouraged her son’s friends to create a fundraising event for TCF in his memory.  Little did she dream it would become the astoundingly successful event it is today!  We thank all involved in the Ira W. Sohn Investment Research Conference for their commitment, compassion and generosity.  Much good will be accomplished with the funds raised from this remarkable event.  And much appreciation is extended to those who made it possible.
